Tone of
Tradition
Since 2021, Buzz & Woody Reeds has done more than refine an old tradition: we've started a new one. Guided by over 20 years of reed making experience, we fuse multiple unique techniques from a variety of styles to provide players with an unmatched performing experience. Buzz & Woody Reeds are made entirely by hand in small batches here at our home in southeast Texas. To achieve optimal quality and consitency, our reeds are aged, play tested, and refined over the course of many weeks, making every reed worth your patience.
Materials
Matter
Buzz & Woody Reeds uses only the highest quality cane imported from Europe, with the renown Herzberg shape and beveling technique setting the foundation for each. This ensures that our reeds respond with ease across the entire range of the bassoon, and allows players to create a dark yet resonant tone with even intonation in every register. We want to expand the perception of store-bought reeds and prove that it doesn't always mean settling for a harsh, abrasive, or difficult to produce sound. As a unique finishing touch, we include our specially designed reed case with each order. Made with precision-cut, mold-resistant foam, our cases securely protect each reed and allow us to ship out the thinnest, most precisely scraped tips of any bassoon reed on the market.
Buzzy
Beginnings
Dr. Brett Van Gansbeke is passionate about reed making and has over 20 years of reed making experience. As a full-time private lesson instructor since 2013, Dr. Brett has consistently provided high-quality reeds to more than 150 young bassoonists in his studio. Achievements of his students include 1st chair Texas 6A All-State, and membership in Houston Youth Symphony, Houston Virtuosi, National Youth Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra 2, and various other summer programs such as Interlochen and Tanglewood. Guided by this breadth of experience, Dr. Brett decided to launch Buzz & Woody Reeds with the goal of offering the same affordable, high-quality reeds to other bassoonists of all ages and skill levels.
